What’s Going On?
On-demand cloud computing provider Amazon Web Services has launched a range of Blockchain Templates for open-source platforms Ethereum and Hyperledger Fabric designed to offer a “blockchain-as-a-service” solution.
Why Does It Matter?
The new offering competes with similar products from Oracle and IBM, reported TechCrunch.
The launch demonstrates how major industry names are spending significants amount of money to get ahead in blockchain, even if clients and customers are still coming to grips with what the technology can do for them.
What’s The Message?
Amazon says blockchain can be confusing and are using a 1970s Saturday Night Live comedy sketch to illustrate the point. “Many of today’s discussions around blockchain technology remind me of the classic Shimmer Floor Wax skit,” said Jeff Barr, Chief Evangelist for AWS, in a blog post about the new service.
“According to Dan Aykroyd, Shimmer is a dessert topping. Gilda Radner claims that it is a floor wax, and Chevy Chase settles the debate and reveals that it actually is both!”
Some see blockchains as the foundation of a new monetary system and a way to facilitate international payments, said Barr. Others see blockchains as a distributed ledger that can be applied to logistics and other use cases.
“Either way, it is clear that there are a lot of intriguing possibilities and we are working to help our customers use this technology more effectively,” said Barr.
